Brexit EU sign

School of Law and Politics academics, Dr Jo Hunt and Dr Ricardo Pereira recently appeared before the National Assembly for Wales External Affairs and Additional Legislation Committee.

The Committee had organised a series of hearings on 19 September to discuss the international law and trade implications of Brexit.

Dr Hunt, who is currently a Senior Fellow with the ESRC’s UK in a Changing Europe initiative, outlined the broad nature of the international legal order, some of its main agencies and agreements, and explained how international and regional law and institutions usually impact at a national level. She referenced European Union institutions, the Council of Europe as well as other regional and international institutions such as the International Labour Organisation and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Dr Pereira then discussed the implications under international trade law of the so-called ‘hard-Brexit’ option, in which the UK trade relations with the EU Member States post-Brexit would be governed by WTO law or a specific EU-UK Free Trade Agreement.

Further information about the hearings can be found at Senedd tv.
