Praise for Cardiff Students’ Union

21 February 2013

Representatives from Cardiff's Students' Union travelled to the House of Commons this month to receive a bronze award from the Student Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI). This accreditation encourages unions to seek the views of their members to improve the services and activities delivered to them.

Cardiff University's Students' Union is owned by 26,000 Cardiff University student members, offering resources and support; advice and representation; training and skills development. The Union is run by eight elected student officers who strive to help students enjoy their time in Cardiff, make friends and leave University with skills for a future career. They also join students in campaigning about the issues important to them and aspire to have a positive impact on the wider community in Cardiff.

Cardiff Students' Union President Harry Newman collected the award at a ceremony in the House of Commons. He said: "The Students' Union Evaluation Initiative, while culminating in an award, is all about a change process. Our Students' Union is unrecognisable from where it was three years ago and the SUEI principles and process were catalysts for the improvement. I was proud to collect the award at the Palace of Westminster on behalf of the organisation but prouder still to represent the only Students' Union present who was accompanied by a Pro Vice-Chancellor."

Professor Patricia Price Pro Vice-Chancellor, Student Experience and Academic Standards who attended the awards ceremony said: "I am particularly delighted for Cardiff's Student Union in winning this award as there was a special commendation for the working relationship between the Student Union and senior staff at the University; it is wonderful to see our strong partnership recognised in this way. The award is the result of a substantial amount of work that the Union has undertaken in recent years - congratulations are in order!"

The Cardiff University Students' Union will be going for gold accreditation in the new framework to be released in the coming few months.
