Cardiff University leads the way in Stonewall Gay by Degree guide

28 June 2013

Cardiff is one of only two universities in the UK and the only university in Wales to achieve top marks in a Stonewall checklist for assessing how supportive universities are for lesbian, gay and bisexual prospective students.

The Stonewall Gay by Degree guide has been established to help perspective students choose a university that will welcome and support LGB students, allowing them to be themselves and contributing to their student experience.

Stonewall has worked with students to identify ten key things that universities should be doing to offer lesbian, gay and bisexual students the most positive experience possible. Cardiff University scored 10/10 in this checklist.

Stonewall Head of Education Wes Streeting said: "With universities charging £9,000 fees, it's right to expect them to provide a high quality experience for all students, including those who are lesbian, gay or bisexual. This year, we've unapologetically introduced stricter criteria to encourage universities to improve provision for students. Particular congratulations are due to Cardiff University and Liverpool John Moores University for being the only universities in Britain to score full marks."

Cardiff University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan said: "Supporting our LGBT+ students and providing an inclusive and welcoming student experience is of vital importance to Cardiff University and I am delighted that the Stonewall Gay by Degree guide has marked us so highly. We will continue to do everything we can to reinforce our commitment in this area."

Luke Young, Education Officer for Stonewall Cymru said: "Cardiff University's well deserved position as the top gay-friendly university in the UK is a result of a clear commitment by staff, students and the whole university community to create an inclusive learning environment.

"People perform better when they are able to be themselves and people are able to perform better at Cardiff University because of its commitment to supporting LGB students and staff."

Cardiff University was also delighted to be recognised as a Stonewall Top 100 Employer for the Workplace Equality Index 2013 earlier this year.
