Professor Graham Hutchings elected to European Academy of Engineering
28 August 2026
We are proud to announce that Regius Professor Graham Hutchings CBE has been elected as a full member of the European Academy of Engineering for 2026, honouring a career of outsize commitment and influence within the sphere of catalysis research.
This prestigious membership acknowledges his significant contributions to sustainable chemistry as a leading figure in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, pioneering gold catalysis and sustainable heterogeneous catalysis.
Professor Hutchings demonstrated that carefully designed gold catalysts could replace mercury in the industrial production of vinyl chloride, while his wide broader research has advanced selective oxidation, hydrogenation, and lower-impact chemical processes, all essential for meeting the challenge of making essential processes more sustainable for future generations.
This award joins a succession of accolades which cement Professor Hutchings place as a leader within the field, including his ENI award for Advanced Environmental Solutions. This international presentation celebrated Professor Hutching’s research on the protection of air, water, land, and the reclamation of industrial sites through the development of low environmental impact catalysts.
Professor Hutchings is Regius Professor of Chemistry at Cardiff University's School of Chemistry. His research focuses on the study of gold nanocrystals as novel active heterogeneous catalysts and their characterisation, the design of selective oxidation and hydrogenation catalysts and their study using in situ spectroscopy, and designing novel heterogeneous catalysts.
We are delighted to host pioneers and forward-thinking academics like Professor Hutchings at Cardiff University, where we are committed to sustainability, equity, and excellence in our research.
