Cardiff University launches British Council–funded training initiative in precision metabolic medicine

9 April 2026

Dr Soha Zouwail, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff

Cardiff University School of Medicine has announced a new international training initiative, designed to strengthen clinical expertise in lipid management and cardiovascular disease prevention.

The programme, Precision Metabolic Medicine: Lipids & Cardiovascular Prevention, has been made possible through a grant from the British Council’s Going Global Partnerships scheme and will be delivered in collaboration with Alexandria University, Egypt.

The initiative will support clinicians and early‑career academics in developing advanced knowledge of cardiometabolic disease, with a focus on precision approaches to lipid disorders, risk assessment and prevention strategies. The course forms part of Cardiff University’s expanding portfolio of specialist medical CPD courses, aimed at enhancing global clinical practice through evidence‑based, accessible training.

The partnership brings together Cardiff University’s expertise in metabolic medicine with Alexandria University’s leadership in medical biochemistry and molecular biology. Through joint teaching, knowledge exchange and shared curriculum development, the project aims to build long‑term capacity in cardiovascular prevention across both institutions.

Dr Soha Zouwail, Consultant in Medical Biochemistry/Metabolic Medicine and Clinical Lead of Acute Biochemistry at the University Hospital of Wales, welcomed the award: “We are delighted to receive this award and to be working in partnership with Alexandria University on this important initiative.

The project provides an opportunity to strengthen education in cardiovascular prevention and lipid management, and to support clinicians in addressing increasingly complex cardiometabolic disease. We are grateful to the British Council for enabling this collaboration and look forward to the impact it will have across both institutions.”

Dr Hend Ahmed Ali Yassin, Alexandria University

Dr Hend Ahmed Ali Yassin, Assistant Professor & Consultant in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Alexandria University, highlighted the significance of the collaboration for clinical training in the region: “We believe that innovation and collaboration are central to the future of medicine.

This initiative represents an important step in supporting the next generation of clinicians and academics in precision metabolic medicine, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to advance practice in Egypt and beyond.”

The Precision Metabolic Medicine: Lipids & Cardiovascular Prevention course provides participants with:

  • An in‑depth understanding of lipid physiology and dyslipidaemia
  • Evidence‑based approaches to cardiovascular risk assessment
  • Updates on emerging therapies and precision‑based interventions
  • Practical guidance for integrating metabolic medicine into clinical pathways

The programme is open to clinicians, biomedical scientists, researchers and healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in cardiometabolic disease.

A growing international CPD portfolio

This initiative reflects Cardiff University’s commitment to expanding high‑quality professional development opportunities that support global health priorities. By fostering international partnerships and sharing specialist expertise, the university continues to contribute to improved clinical outcomes and workforce development worldwide.
