Local school children presented with awards for road safety designs

12 May 2016

School Winners

Children from Grangetown's primary schools have been presented with awards for designing road safety signs highlighting the hazards they encounter on their commute to school.

The competition was part of Community Gateway's 'Safety Week' and helped the children to think about their route to school and become more aware of the dangers that they may encounter. Community Gateway had some wonderful and inspiring entries making it extremely difficult to pick the winners, however an overall winner was picked from each of the four local primary schools.

On 28th April Project Manager for Community Gateway Lynne Thomas was joined by Ashley Lister from Grangetown Community Action and members of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, South Wales Police and Cardiff Council to present the awards to the children. The winning entries will now be made into road safety signs and displayed outside the schools.

Lynne Thomas said of the event:

“It was an absolute pleasure to present each well-deserved winner with their certificate, prize and poster.  The number and quality of entries was exceptional and picking just one winner from each school was very difficult.  Ultimately, the judging panel felt that the four winners had shown flair and creativity with their poster designs while also demonstrating a real understanding of potential hazards on their journey to school.  The poster competition was certainly one of the highlights of Safety Week 2015.  Congratulations to all the children for their fantastic effort.”
