New Welsh-language podcast asks life’s big questions

A new Welsh-language podcast series presented by Dr Huw Williams, Reader in Philosophy is taking on some of the biggest questions we wrestle with as humans - including What is the meaning of life?, Why is there poverty in the world?, Why is there racism? and Is peace possible?
Released this week by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, the six-part series is aimed at students studying Humanities and Social Sciences in the sixth form or at university, while staying accessible for anyone with an interest in these themes.
Dr Williams said: “This is a podcast in Welsh that is a little different from the norm, and which - as the title suggests - tackles some of life's big questions. It starts with the assumption that all of us reflect on complex and profound issues from time to time, and it is a healthy and natural thing to discuss and reflect on these issues.
“I have been fortunate enough to be able to hold some interesting and entertaining conversations with various friends and colleagues on these issues, and I trust that we have created a short series that is going to stimulate a response among school and university students, and the public alike.”
With a philosopher as presenter, each episode is shaped by discussion with expert guests, including leading Welsh academics.
Dr Williams added: “From the point of view of younger listeners, the aim of the project is to create an engaging and accessible resource for students, teachers and lecturers in order to stimulate interest among the younger generation, and introduce them to discussions which are useful for their studies, and which will hopefully inspire them to take a further interest in relevant fields.
“More generally, in my opinion, it is important to create a platform that gives academics the opportunity to discuss a range of meaningful and interesting topics, extending the offer available to listeners in the Welsh language, and promoting Welsh intellectual life in General.”
The podcast is available to watch on the Coleg Cymraeg Resource Portal, and to listen on Y Pod and Spotify. It was produced with original incidental music by Osian Gwynedd, and funded by the Coleg Cymraeg as part of the Coleg’s Small Grants Fund.
