Professor Aris Syntetos appointed Fellow of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences

30 January 2026

Professor Aris Syntetos, Professor of Decision Science at Cardiff Business School, has been appointed to the inaugural cohort of Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, following a ceremony held on Thursday 29 January at the Royal Society in London.

The inaugural cohort includes Fields Medal winners, leading business figures, distinguished academics and educators, science communicators, and pioneers of computing and machine learning. Fellows are recognised for leadership through fundamental discoveries, excellence in education, or the application of mathematics across society and the UK’s critical national infrastructure.

The Academy brings together all theoretical and applied mathematics societies in the UK, including the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications (IMA) and the Operational Research Society (ORS), both of which Professor Syntetos has been a long‑standing member.

Professor Syntetos is internationally recognised for his work bridging mathematics and management, applying rigorous theory to address real‑world challenges in supply chains and operations management. His research career spans more than 25 years, beginning with a PhD in Operational Research and Mathematical Statistics jointly funded by academia and industry, and culminating in the establishment of the strategic partnership between Cardiff University and DSV.

I am deeply honoured to receive this fellowship, recognising my work at the interface between mathematics and management, and my commitment to bridging rigorous theory with real‑world decision‑making. I dedicate it to the memory of my late mentor and PhD supervisor, John Boylan, whose influence continues to shape my work. I am also grateful to the IMA and the OR Society for their support since my early PhD years, and I look forward to the Academy’s role in strengthening the impact of mathematical sciences on management practice and policy.

Professor Aris Syntetos Distinguished Research Professor, DSV Chair

Dr Colette Fletcher, Executive Director at The OR Society said, "We are delighted to see Professor Aris Syntetos appointed as a Fellow of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences. This prestigious recognition reflects his outstanding contributions to the application of mathematics in management and operational research. Aris’ work exemplifies the impact that rigorous mathematical thinking can have on real‑world challenges, and his appointment is highly deserved. It is inspiring to see such leadership celebrated at the highest level within the UK’s mathematical sciences community."

Congratulations to Aris on this exceptional achievement. This is wonderful news and a richly deserved award, recognising Aris’ ongoing and important contributions to the fields of mathematics and management.
