Cardiff University Launches Hands-On AI Training for Public Services

Building on Cardiff University’s ongoing collaboration with the Centre for Digital Public Services (CDPS) to upskill the Welsh public sector - through the delivery of several successful AI courses led by Professor Omer Rana- Cardiff University is launching a new short course designed to help professionals harness Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly and effectively in the workplace.
The workshop, “AI in the Workplace: AI as Your Co-Pilot,” is offered under the umbrella of the Digital Transformation Innovation Institute (DTII), with support from the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Unit.
Delivered in partnership with CDPS, this interactive four-hour session provides practical, hands-on experience for professionals eager to explore how AI can be integrated into everyday work tasks.
This training is specifically designed for professionals working in the Welsh public sector delivering devolved services and is funded by the Welsh Government, ensuring accessibility for those shaping public services across Wales.
Led by Dr Matthew Mort and Matthew Hayden—known as “The Matts”—the workshop focuses on using AI as a collaborative assistant rather than a replacement for human creativity. Participants will learn how to:
- Experiment with AI tools through guided exercises to build confidence.
- Explore workplace productivity use-cases for AI.
- Develop effective prompts using five key principles.
- Understand responsible AI practices, including data protection and ethical considerations.
AI is more about mindset than technology. Our goal is to help professionals cut through the hype and start their AI journey in a way that feels practical, safe, and human-centric.
This workshop reflects our commitment to empowering the Welsh workforce with the skills needed for a digital future. AI is transforming how we work, and we want to ensure that this transformation is inclusive, ethical, and innovative.
