Empowering young women through financial literacy

10 December 2025

On October 27, Cardiff Business School proudly partnered with Women Connect First, a Cardiff-based charity, to deliver an inspiring financial literacy and trading event.

The initiative welcomed a group of talented young women from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds, aiming to build confidence, skills, and ambition in the next generation of female leaders. The day featured a series of engaging sessions led by academic experts from the Accounting and Finance Section.

Dr Svetlana Mira gave a welcome address to the young women, introducing the transformative potential of accounting, finance, and higher education.

Professor Alpa Dhanani delivered a talk sharing insights into how careers in accounting and finance can offer rewarding opportunities for young women in Wales.

Following the talks, Dr Bilal Hafeez delivered a lively financial literacy interactive workshop, complete with quizzes, covering budgeting, financial planning, and informed investment strategies. Finally, the Trading Simulation Competition took place, led by Professor Qingwei Wang and Mr Jiaxun Zhang. This gave all the participants the opportunity to step into the role of financial analysts and investors, navigating breaking news and fundamental data to make real-time equity trading decisions in our flagship trading room facility.

Beyond the learning experience, attendees enjoyed networking opportunities, discussions about university life, and refreshments. supported by Cardiff Business School’s Public Value initiatives.

Our team was thrilled to organise this event for Women Connect First. We aimed to share financial knowledge and inspire the next generation of females in the accounting and finance field. These young women are confident with new technologies and eager to make a difference in leadership roles. It was our privilege to work with such talented and competent individuals, and we look forward to future collaborations under the banner of Public Value at Cardiff Business School.
