Cardiff Confucius Institute Delivers Three Fascinating Chinese Insights Talks at Cardiff University
4 December 2025
Students, staff, and community members were treated to a trio of engaging cultural experiences this semester as the Cardiff Confucius Institute (CCI) delivered three Chinese Insights talks in the John Percival Building at Cardiff University. Each 40-minute session was led by one of CCI’s Mandarin tutors, who presented in English and brought unique perspectives on Chinese culture, innovation, and sport.
Harbin Ice and Snow Festival
The series opened on 30 October, when tutor Xi Li transported audiences to the frosty landscapes of northeast China to Discover the Ice and Snow Wonderland of Harbin. Attendees explored the city’s world-famous Ice and Snow Festival, its architectural wonders, and the traditions that make Harbin one of China’s most enchanting winter destinations.
China's Electric Vehicle Industry
On 18 November, tutor Lei Zhang shifted the spotlight to one of China’s most dynamic modern industries with A Brief Introduction to the Electric Vehicle Industry in China. The talk unpacked China’s rapid rise as a global EV leader, offering insight into cutting-edge technologies, market forces, and what the future may hold for sustainable transport.
Air Volleyball
The semester concluded on 4 December with tutor Shaorong Lin, who introduced audiences to Air Volleyball, a fast-growing team sport that originated in China. Combining accessibility with energetic gameplay, air volleyball sparked lively discussion about its increasing popularity and potential for adoption in the UK.
These events reflect the Cardiff Confucius Institute’s mission to offer high-quality cultural and educational activities that strengthen ties between Cardiff University and its longstanding partner, Xiamen University. Through language teaching and diverse cultural programmes, CCI continues to enrich both campus life and the wider community.
With three more Chinese Insights talks planned for next semester, audiences can look forward to another round of thought-provoking sessions.
