Engage with uncertainty and shape the future

2 December 2025

Applications for the Art and Science of Uncertainty and the Future Interdisciplinary Summer School are now open.

Taking place in Cardiff from July 6 to July 11, 2026, the summer school will bring together PhD students, early-career academics, and practitioners for a week of creative learning, dialogue, and collaboration.

This summer school is an international programme exploring how uncertainty shapes knowledge, practice, and imagination across disciplines.

Delegates will explore a rich spectrum of approaches through a variety of exercises including:

  • Keynote sessions with leading thinkers
  • Interactive workshops
  • Research spotlights
  • Panel discussions
  • Case study studios
  • A field excursion in Wales

The programme is designed to build futures-oriented capabilities and cultivate interdisciplinary networks equipped to address today’s most complex global challenges.

The summer school forms part of the Cardiff Futures Initiative, which seeks to build futures capacity and foster innovation in research and practice. Conceived as the first in a planned annual series hosted in Cardiff, it will reinforce Cardiff University’s position as a leading hub for interdisciplinary futures and uncertainty research.

Applications are open now and will close on March 1, 2026. Full details on pricing and registration guidelines are also available. The full programme for the summer school will then be released in April.
