Launch of national Maths Week Wales hopes to encourage learners to rethink their relationship with subject
12 November 2025
Cardiff University is one of 20 organisations behind Mathŵyl Cymru, which will be running a week-long programme of events for learners in Wales
The aim of Mathŵyl Cymru is to promote maths for all, encouraging people to think about the subject in a new light and alleviating the anxiety that many learners may associate with it.
The week-long programme of activities, taking place between 29 November and 7 December, will involve engagement from enrichment specialists, museums, teaching organisations, and universities.
Mathŵyl Cymru received a generous donation that enabled them to offer grants to 20 primary and secondary schools from across Wales which will enable them to run special Maths Week Wales projects for their learners. The initiative has also been awarded funding from Admiral.
It is hoped that Mathŵyl Cymru will be a significant step in making maths more fun and accessible in Wales, following the success of similar Maths Week schemes in Scotland, Ireland and England.
Dr Thomas Woolley (Reader in Applied Mathematics, School of Mathematics) and Joanna Emery (Industry and External Engagement Manager, School of Computer Science and Informatics) are both members of the Mathŵyl Cymru steering group, alongside colleagues from partner organisations including Maths Support Programme Wales, Bubbly Maths, UK Maths Trust, Central South Consortium, and Science Made Simple.
Mathŵyl Cymru Maths Week Wales 2025 is a chance for all to celebrate the beauty and wonder of mathematics, a chance for all to question the algorithms that lie behind many decisions that influence our lives and a chance for all to reengage with mathematics in a friendly and non-judgmental manner.
Francis Hunt, Maths Support Programme Wales, said: “Mathŵyl Cymru is about seeing and celebrating the big picture around maths - that maths belongs to us all. It’s 5000 years of people like us finding handy ways to solve problems, and at its best, maths is interesting, useful and fun. We’re hoping everyone in Wales meets some of this during the week.”
