Professor Martin Innes Speaks to Radio Free Europe about Russian Propaganda in Armenia

31 October 2025

Professor Martin Innes was recently featured on Radio Azatutyun, the Armenian Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

He discussed how Russia is intensifying its propaganda efforts ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections in June 2026.

Research by Radio Azatutyun reveals that more than 20 Telegram channels are actively spreading Russian state narratives, as well as anti-government and anti-EU propaganda, targeting audiences across Armenia.

These channels frequently portray the European Union as a destructive force for Armenia, while also leveraging artificial intelligence to create videos and organising online seminars to recruit Moldovan citizens for paid campaigns promoting pro-Russian content and disinformation on platforms like Facebook and TikTok, particularly against Moldova’s pro-European ruling party.

Professor Innes explains that these tactics mirror similar disinformation campaigns in other post-Soviet states, noting;

“They try to identify problems, topics that can be exploited in Armenia, Moldova, or Georgia, the kind around which they think they can create a sense of division and polarisation.”
