Exploring the shifting educational landscape
5 November 2025
Speaking at the European Civil Engineering Education and Training conference in Budapest last month, Professor Kwan’s lecture ‘From Z to A’, discussed the nature of generation gaps in higher education.
Outlining the learning characteristics of current Gen Z students and the changes anticipated for the generation following in their footsteps, Gen Alpha, he acknowledged the educational challenges that arise with evolving learning styles.
Exploring how innovative approaches can meet these challenges, including modification to facilities, technology advances and mindset change, Professor Kwan showcased examples of similar innovations already implemented at Cardiff University – demonstrating the ways in which universities can evolve and adapt to deliver positive outcomes.
Professor Kwan was recently jointly nominated by the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers to serve as a Member of the Joint Board of Moderators, the body that assesses and makes recommendations on accreditation and approval of Civil Engineering (and related) higher education programmes to the UK Engineering Council.
