Professor Georgina Santos appointed Lead Author for UN climate report
21 October 2025
Professor Georgina Santos has been appointed as a Lead Author of the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7, 2025–2028) of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), contributing to Working Group III on Climate Change Mitigation.
Her appointment follows a highly competitive international selection process. Out of 3,771 global nominees, only 664 experts were chosen, with just 12 selected to contribute to Chapter 11 on Transport and Mobility Services and Systems.
Professor Santos said: “It is a big responsibility because the assessment reports are used as a reference in international climate negotiations. I am very honoured to have been invited, and I look forward to contributing to this important work, working with colleagues from around the world to produce what is recognised as the most comprehensive, peer-reviewed assessment of climate science.”
The IPCC is the United Nations body responsible for assessing the science related to climate change. Established in 1988 by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), it brings together 195 member countries to provide policymakers with regular scientific assessments on climate change, its impacts, and potential solutions.
Working Group III focuses on options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. Its Transport and Mobility chapter explores strategies for passenger and freight transport, key themes in Professor Santos’s research on sustainable transport systems and low-carbon mobility.
The IPCC’s Assessment Reports are central to international efforts to tackle climate change, informing the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the global negotiations that shape climate policy.
