Top-performing MSc students celebrated for academic excellence in transport and planning

1 September 2025

Two outstanding Transport and Planning (MSc) students at the School of Geography and Planning have been recognised for their exceptional academic performance.

Kieran Horspole and Lois Weedon achieved the highest marks in the taught component of the master’s programme for 2024–25. Programme Director Professor Dimitris Potoglou praised both students for their commitment and enthusiasm for the dynamic and impactful field of transport and planning.

In recognition of their achievements, Kieran was presented with a copy of Forecasting Urban Travel: Past, Present and Future, co-authored by Emeritus Professor Huw Williams and Professor David Boyce (University of Illinois at Chicago). The book won the 2016 William Alonso Memorial Prize for Innovative Work in Regional Science and remains a definitive text in the field.

Lois received a copy of Handbook of Travel Behaviour, edited by Professor Dimitris Potoglou and Professor Justin Spinney. The book brings together global perspectives on travel behaviour research, exploring analytical methods, environmental concerns, and social dimensions of mobility.

Professor Gillian Bristow, Head of the School of Geography and Planning, said: “Congratulations to our top-performing students on the MSc Transport and Planning programme. Their dedication and hard work have set them apart in a highly competitive field, and we are delighted to recognise their achievements.

“Their awards reflect not only academic excellence but also a drive to shape the future of sustainable and efficient transport systems.”

Emeritus Professor Huw Williams added: "Congratulations to the whole class of 2024–25 for all your efforts on the course. I am particularly pleased that my book with David Boyce, Forecasting Urban Travel, will be presented once again! Well done!"

Professor Dimitris Potoglou said: “I’m incredibly proud of Kieran and Lois for their outstanding achievements. Their results reflect the dedication and curiosity they’ve shown throughout the programme. I’m confident they’ll go on to make meaningful contributions in the field of transport and planning.

“I’d also like to sincerely thank Professor Huw Williams for once again donating a copy of his seminal book—an invaluable resource that continues to inspire students and professionals alike.”
