A nurse from West Wales who won a prestigious national award during her studies is graduating from the University’s Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) this week.

Casi Lewis’ life was busy when she first started the Health Visiting Programme  on the SCPHN, fitting her studies around her two small children.

Casi said: “I am originally from West Wales, but moved to Cardiff in 2006 to study my first degree at Cardiff University.

“The SCPHN course is my third time at Cardiff University. I moved away to live in London and work at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital - but found my way back to Cardiff.”

After studying her first degree at the  University, Casi returned to  undertake  a BSc in Social Sciences and a PgDip in Child Nursing.

I have wonderful memories of each and every time I’ve studied at Cardiff and have lifelong friends that I have met on all three courses.

“I completed my SCPHN course part-time over two years, juggling home life with two young children.

“The health visiting course emphasised the importance of the formative years of children’s lives, so I made sure to prioritise my family time. I worked hard during study time, spending many hours in the library researching and reading journals. However, every evening and weekend was dedicated to my family, and I cherished the time I spent with my children and husband,” added Casi.

During her studies, Casi was awarded the Dora Roylance Award, an award from the Queen’s Nursing Institute in memory of Dora Roylance who was a former Queen’s Nurse and Health Visitor. The award recognises outstanding students.

Casi said: “I was so surprised to have won the award, but was so honoured and felt a huge sense of achievement. The course was incredibly challenging with many ups and down, where I wanted to give up many times. I persevered and winning the award felt like the icing on the cake.”

Casi graduated with her MSc in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) at a ceremony on Monday July 14.

Having been a student at this university three times, I highly recommend it to any prospective student.

"The SCPHN course was particularly challenging, but the lecturers were incredibly supportive and demonstrated compassionate leadership. Their passion for their chosen careers shone through in every aspect of the teaching, which was an inspiration as a health visitor embarking on this new role,” Casi said.
