A senior lecturer in Chemical Biology from Cardiff University has been named winner of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Award for Exceptional Service in recognition of inspirational work as a volunteer.
Dr James Redman received the award for years of voluntary work on the Chemical Biology and Bioorganic Group and the South East Wales Local Section.
One of RSC’s Volunteer Recognition Prizes, the award celebrates those who give their time freely in numerous ways, from serving on boards and committees to working on public engagement initiatives.
Over years of outstanding service, Dr Redman has given up his time to lead and support events helping to educate and excite the chemistry community and the wider public.
To mark the achievement, he will receive a medal.
Dr Redman said: “It has been a pleasure volunteering with the local section and interest group committees to support events that bring the community together and enthuse the public and young people about chemistry.
“I have certainly met a lot of fantastic chemists, learned much and gained confidence from the experience of fellow committee members.”
As well as supporting events in his community, Dr Redman is director of teaching in the School of Chemistry where he teaches biological, organic and medicinal chemistry.
His research has included designed proteins and development of sensors to guide diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease.
The Royal Society of Chemistry’s prizes have recognised excellence in the chemical sciences for more than 150 years.
Dr Helen Pain, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry, said: “Our prize winners come from a vast array of backgrounds, all contributing in different ways to our base of knowledge, and bringing fresh ideas and innovations. We recognise chemical scientists from every career stage and every role type, including those who contribute to the RSC’s work as volunteers. We celebrate winners from both industry and academia, as well as individuals, teams, and the science itself.
“Their passion, dedication and brilliance are an inspiration. I extend my warmest congratulations to them all.”
