Cardiff alumni recognised in 2025 King’s Birthday Honours

Members of the Cardiff University alumni community have been recognised for their outstanding achievements in the King’s Birthday Honours List for 2025.

Doug Perkins (BSc 1965, Hon 2005), Co-Founder and Chair of high street opticians Specsavers, has been awarded a CBE for services to Business and Trade.

Peter Francis (BA 1990), Chief of Staff at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, has received an OBE for services to Global Commemoration.

Gareth Stapleton (BSc 1995, BArch 1997), Founder and Partner at RiSE International, has been awarded an OBE for services to Architecture and to Project and Construction Management.

Commander Jon Browett (BSc 2001) has been awarded an OBE in the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Professor Fang Gao Smith FMedSci (MD 2005), Professor of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain at the University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, has been awarded an OBE for services to Anaesthesia.

Ruth Dodsworth (BA 1996, PgDip 1997) has received an OBE for services to Victims and Survivors of Domestic Abuse.

The Reverend Peter Abrams (PgDip 1992, MTh 1995), Hospital Chaplain and Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy Manager at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, has received an MBE for services to the community in Merseyside and West Lancashire.

Dr Ian Bowler (MBBCh 1990), Chair and Clinical Lead at Medserve Wales, has been awarded an MBE for services to National Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine.

Elaine Brown (BScEcon 1984), Schools Outreach lead at the University of the West of England, has received an MBE for services to Education and to Cyber Security.

Kevin Coutinho (LLB 1998, MA 2001), Chair of Trustees at the Windsor Fellowship, has been awarded an MBE for services to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Andrew Harston (BSc 1983, MBA 1999), Regional Director at Associated British Ports, has received an MBE for services to Ports.

Dr Alastair Roeves (PgCert 2011), lately National Clinical Lead for Primary Care and Community Services for Wales at NHS Wales Executive, has been awarded an MBE for services to Healthcare.

Dr Tracey Sandom (PgCert 2010, PgDip 2012, MSc 2014), lately Chair of the British Association of Dental Therapists, has received an MBE for services to Dental Therapy and to the NHS in Wales.

Peter Stanley (MSc 1995), Senior Specialist Advisor on Abandoned Mines at Natural Resources Wales, has been awarded an MBE for services to Geoscience and Metal Mines.

Tara Rees (MSc 2018), Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, has received a BEM for services to Nursing.

Glen Johnson (BA 1991) has been awarded a BEM for services to Heritage.

Diane Powles (BSc 2002), Strategic Education Adviser at Health Education and Improvement Wales, has received a BEM for services to Nursing and to Education.
