Cardiff Business School director invited to Parliament to outline plan for a sustainable future in UK business

The Director of Cardiff Sustainable Finance Research Group at Cardiff University received an invitation to Westminster from a Member of Parliament.

Reader in Finance Dr Onur Kemal Tosun visited London following an invite from Josh Newbury MP to address Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) misconducts, sustainability, and socially responsible investments and their impact on British firms.

Dr Tosun said, “I was intrigued to hear how my research can help the UK Government to develop incentives for British companies to choose sustainable operations and deter them from ESG misconducts.

“My research shows dire market value-decreasing consequences of ignoring ESG pressure by public and shareholders and engaging such misconducts.

“Causing fewer ESG incidents including environmental ones would also feed back to the Government’s commitment on fewer carbon emissions, preservation of biodiversity, sustaining wildlife and clean waters.”

Dr Tosun also had the opportunity to discuss his work in cyber security, “I was also excited to address my research on cyber-attacks and their short and long-term effects on firms, emphasising the importance of cyber-security, given recent incidents with British firms and Government Agencies.

Some of Dr Tosun’s recent work includes investigating socially responsible investment funds, examining the impact of benefit corporation certification on the profitability of UK companies, and a study on how investors react differently to global ESG incidents across countries.

He concluded, “I was very pleasantly surprised by this opportunity and formal recognition of my work. It’s motivated me to pursue my research further in this field that I feel passionate about.

“It was fantastic to see that my work generates impact not only in academia but also outside of this society.”
