Head of School Professor Jianzhong Wu appointed Upson Visiting Professor at Cornell University

18 June 2025

Professor Jianzhong Wu, Head of School of Engineering and a leading researcher in Smart Grids and Multi-Vector Energy Systems, has been named the Mary Shepard B. Upson Visiting Professor in Engineering at Cornell University.

Established in 1966, the Mary Shepard B. Upson Visiting Professorship in Engineering is a prestigious position at Cornell University, an Ivy League institution ranked among the top 20 universities globally. The endowment was made through a bequest from the widow of Maxwell M. Upson, a Cornell mechanical engineering alumnus and long-time trustee, with the aim of strengthening graduate teaching and research in engineering. The position has been held by many internationally distinguished scientists across physics, chemistry, materials science, and bioengineering.

Professor Wu is a Fellow of the IEEE, the Energy Institute, and the Learned Society of Wales, and currently also holds the AI for Science Visiting Professorship at Cornell. He is internationally recognised as one of the pioneering researchers who initiated and established the fields of multi-energy systems and peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading, both of which have become prominent areas in global energy research.

With an H-index of 83 on Google Scholar, Professor Wu has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers, including 14 Clarivate ESI Highly Cited Papers and four in Nature journals (Nature Energy, Nature Communications, and Nature Scientific Data). He has contributed to over 70 major research projects funded by the European Commission (EC), the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and industry, acting as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator.

Professor Wu’s appointment as the Mary Shepard B. Upson Visiting Professor reflects both his outstanding research achievements and his ongoing contribution to the advancement of global energy systems.

It is a great honour to be appointed to this historic visiting professorship at Cornell University. I look forward to working with colleagues and students at Cornell Engineering to address some of the most pressing challenges in global energy systems through both teaching and research. This is also an excellent opportunity to strengthen academic links between Cornell and the School of Engineering at Cardiff University, and to explore new avenues for international collaboration in cutting-edge energy research.
Professor Jianzhong Wu, Head of School
