Dear student,
As the academic year draws to a close I wanted to share an important update and wish you all the best for the summer break.
In my last message to you, I talked about the proposal to establish a new School of Global Humanities. We are now able to share the full Our Academic Future business case with you. It outlines the School of Global Humanities proposal as well as several other proposals that my University Executive Board colleagues plan to take forward.
The business case sets out how we plan to start to achieve academic and financial sustainability while at the same time delivering on the ambitions of our university strategy, ‘Our Future, Together’. They have been shaped by you, in particular through the questions you asked at over 50 meetings with students in affected schools, which help ensure the university is fit for the future.
The business case includes proposals that have changed because of the alternative ideas we’ve received, including:
- retaining Music and Modern Languages in a new School of Global Humanities
- continuing to teach Nursing across the three degree programmes
It also outlines that we plan to continue with our original proposal to stop teaching Ancient History and Religion and Theology and merge some schools – reducing the total from 24 to 16.
You can read the full business case on the student intranet. Remember, these changes are still proposals at this stage, and if approved by University Council on 17 June, won’t start happening until 2026/27. We’ll of course keep you updated.
Celebrating your year at Cardiff
I want to take a moment to reflect on everything you've built together this year. From award-winning projects to Varsity success, campus-wide events to peer support networks, this year has been filled with so many moments to strengthen our sense of belonging at Cardiff - our cynefin. Our photo gallery captures some of the best moments.
You’ve put in the hard work this year and I’m sure you’re keen to receive your results. These will be available shortly via your Academic Record on SIMS. Check with your academic or personal tutor if you're not sure when that will be.
Summer support
Many of you will be heading home soon, but if you're staying in Cardiff, just a quick reminder that some of our buildings and services (like libraries, catering, and Student Connect) might have different opening hours. Wherever you are, you will still be able to get mental health and wellbeing support if you need it. Read more on accessing services and support this summer.
To those of you returning next year - enjoy your summer! Take the time to rest, recharge, and reflect on all that you have accomplished. We look forward to seeing you back on campus in September.
Graduation #CardiffGrad 2025
Congratulations to all our graduates! I’m looking forward to celebrating with you in July. Be sure to register your place by midnight on Tuesday, 24 June. Remember our Graduate Futures support is here to help you understand your options and succeed in securing a job, further study or any other opportunities you wish to pursue. Best of luck with everything!
I hope you have a wonderful summer break. Thank you again for all your hard work, positive energy and commitment this academic year – you've been amazing! Whether you are continuing your studies or starting a new chapter, I wish you all the very best.
Best wishes,
Professor Nicola Innes
