Cardiff Racing prepares to launch final combustion car ahead of next year’s transition to electric

Mechanical Engineering student and Cardiff Racing team lead, Sam Gibbons, asked some of our current students at Cardiff University about their experience getting involved with Cardiff Racing.
The School of Engineering's Cardiff Racing team is the university’s competitive Formula Student team that designs, builds, and races a single-seat car each year.
2025 marks the 23rd year of Cardiff Racing building Formula Student cars and representing Cardiff University at Formula Student competitions at Silverstone and across Europe. This year also marks the final year of building a combustion car before the team’s transition to electric in 2026.
Cardiff Racing are set to launch their 2025 car in the Engineering Forum on 6 June, showcasing a year of work for the team of volunteering students. The team comprises of students from across the university from any course or discipline who spend their spare time between lectures and studying to design, make, build and test a single-seat race car.
Amelia, who has joined the team in her first year, started getting involved with building and running the car:
“For myself as a first-year mechanical engineering student, Formula Student has been an excellent opportunity for me to get hands-on experience, applying what I’ve learned in lectures and bringing it to life. From CAD designs and testing days, right through to the sponsorship and outreach days to local schools, there has always been the opportunity to get involved.
"The team have been very welcoming, running paddock inductions, and always being around to answer questions. As a member of Cardiff Racing, getting to work alongside like-minded, older students from a range of degrees has also been invaluable. In pursuit of a career in motorsport, Formula Student is helping me build fundamental skills in all areas required in the development of a race car, fit for the circuit come competition in July at Silverstone!”
Morgan, who had been a part of the team since his first year, has led the business team while also volunteering to help design and build multiple cars alongside driving the cars at competitions:
“Going into my fourth and final year at Cardiff University studying mechanical engineering, I have helped in many areas of the team and contributed to the success of Cardiff Racing. This year, I am again looking forward to attending the UK and Czech Formula Student competitions with Cardiff Racing, aiming to win some silverware. Attending competition with the team is always the highlight of the year, as all the hard work of designing and building the car pays off on track, and we spend the week alongside all of my friends.
"Moving into next year, I am excited for the challenge that building an electric Formula Student car carries, and I look forward to helping lead the team. I am hoping the team can hit the ground running in September, when the new year starts, attracting lots of new members to help with the project.”
