Professor Anthony Mandal elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales

Professor Anthony Mandal has been elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, the national academy that recognises outstanding contributions to the arts, humanities, sciences, and public life in Wales.

Professor Mandal, who specialises in book history, digital humanities, and nineteenth-century literature, is one of 56 distinguished individuals elected this year. His fellowship recognises his leadership, research excellence, and ongoing contributions to the academic and cultural life of Wales.

Professor Mandal is Director of the Centre for Editorial and Intertextual Research, a hub for scholarship in textual studies and the digital humanities. He is also a member of the Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultures Research, which fosters interdisciplinary collaborations across academia, heritage, and creative sectors.

His research spans topics including gothic fiction, women’s writing, and the history of print culture. He has published widely on authors such as Jane Austen, Mary Brunton, and Robert Louis Stevenson, and is currently leading a major project, The Cambridge Feminist History of Women’s Writing, from the Middle Ages to the Present (CUP, forthcoming 2027).

Beyond his research, Professor Mandal is a committed public scholar and academic leader. He served as President of the British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS) from 2019 to 2024, having previously held the role of Vice-President.

He regularly shares his expertise through public lectures, festival appearances, and outreach events, as well as writing for platforms such as The Conversation.
