Mathematicians elected fellows of the Learned Society of Wales
7 May 2025

Professor Angela Mihai and Professor Maggie Chen from the School of Mathematics at Cardiff University have been elected fellows of the Learned Society of Wales (LSW).
They are among the 60 new fellows and honorary fellows honoured this year for their exceptional contributions to research, academia, and civil and cultural life in Wales.
The LSW fellowship supports the Society’s “charitable aim of advancing the use of research and innovation for the benefit of Wales’ economy and society”.
Angela Mihai is a Professor of Applied Mathematics and has broad research interests in applied and computational mathematics at the interface with physical and natural sciences. She has made pioneering contributions to fundamental solid mechanics and the mathematical understanding of soft materials, including multiscale modelling, limit states analysis, optimisation, and uncertainty quantification.
I am honoured and excited to become a Fellow of The Learned Society of Wales. I look forward to getting involved in the Society’s activities by supporting research and innovation and promoting Wales to the highest level internationally. I am also grateful to Professor Tim Phillips for nominating me.
Maggie Chen is a Professor of Financial Mathematics with expertise in interdisciplinary approaches of financial modelling that tackles real-life finance problems. Her research provides a methodological foundation for social-technical issues in FinTech, financial market behaviour, financial network, sustainability and market stability, regulatory impacts, and more recently AI for collective intelligence in finance.
Her work not only brings contribution to the academic literature and advancement in multiple disciplines including finance, economics, applied statistics etc., but also attracts financial service industry for collaboration and co-created solutions.
I’m proud to have received this fellowship. It’s a real privilege to join such a respected community of academics. I’m looking forward to contributing to the society’s mission and working with others to highlight the value of mathematical research in solving real-world problems.
