Three members of the School of Law and Politics community have been recognised in this year’s Enriching Student Life awards shortlist.

The Enriching Student Life Awards (ESLAs) recognise the hard work of staff and students who make positive contributions to the student experience. They are run annually by Cardiff University and the Students’ Union. This year, a record-breaking 1,950 nominations were received across 16 categories.

Senior Lecturer in Law, Dr Huw Pritchard has made the short list for the ‘Champion for Welsh Education’ category. This category showcases a student or staff member who is a role model for the Welsh Language, encourages others to use the language and creates opportunities to engage with Welsh culture and history.

Speaking of his nomination, Dr Pritchard said, “It is a pleasure to be nominated for the ESLAs and it’s an exciting time for the Welsh-medium teaching team in the School of Law. We are looking forward to rolling out more opportunities for students to study bilingually through dedicated Welsh language support and the incorporation of Welsh-medium provision on our core modules.”

Second year Politics student Owain Sion and third year Politics student Rebecca Rumsey have both been recognised in the ‘President’s Award’ category. The President’s Award aims to recognise students who have gone above and beyond to make the student experience better for their peers.

Owain is a prolific member of the University’s Welsh community and is involved in Cardiff University Welsh Society, Y GymGym and Cardiff’s’ Welsh Language Students’ Union, Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Caerdydd (UMCC). Speaking of his shortlist he said, “It's a huge privilege to be nominated along with individuals and groups who have done so much to promote and improve student life around campus. This recognition comes off the back of a lot of hard work done by my friends in Y GymGym, UMCC and across the Welsh student body - I couldn't be more grateful for their help and support over the past year, and look forward to working with them in future.”

Rebecca has been nominated for her work as Women’s Officer and founder of the anti-sexual misconduct campaign, Time to Act. She has represented students across the university while tackling this issue and has represented students across Wales to Welsh Government and UK Government. She said, “I'm so grateful to be nominated alongside such amazing people who have all worked so hard to improve life here at Cardiff. This wouldn't have been possible without all the people at Time to Act, they give every single minute to bettering our community and no success we have achieved would've ever been possible without the amazing work they have put in, I'm so honoured to know every single one of them."

The Enriching Student Life Awards will take place at an awards ceremony on 9 May. Good luck to all involved!
