This September a delegation of senior judges and magistrates from Kenya visited Cardiff to discuss opportunities for collaboration in training, research, and education.

The delegation of over 20 senior members of the judiciary was led by Hon. Lady Justice Philomena Mbete Mwilu, Deputy Chief Justice and Vice President of the Kenyan Supreme Court. The judges were in Wales to attend the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association #CMJA Conference held between 10-14 September 2023.

Welcomed by Law Professor and Dean of International for Africa, Ambreena Manji the group discussed a range of issues from the importance of research to the judiciary to Kenya’s place at the centre of global constitutional debates.

Professor Manji, herself a Kenyan, directed the British Academy’s British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) in Nairobi before taking up her position at Cardiff University. Speaking of the visit she said, “I was delighted to welcome judicial colleagues to Cardiff on the occasion of the Commonwealth conference. This gave us an important opportunity to explore continuing our close collaborative relationship which began when I was at the BIEA and which is founded on a firm commitment to research as a foundation stone of constitutionalism.”
