Autumn concert series announced
22 September 2023
The School of Music is excited to announce its Autumn concert series! Free tickets are available for all concerts to Cardiff University students and staff.
The series will launch with Christopher Williams and Catherine Tanner-Williams on Tuesday 10th October. Christopher is one of the school’s piano tutors, and will be accompanying his wife Catherine on the oboe. Expect a programme ranging from contemporary works by Richard Elfyn Jones, to classical repertoire by Poulenc and Mendelssohn.
Another of our practical tutors, Raymond Clarke, will give a solo piano performance on the 17th of October. The audience will get to hear the original 1913 version of Rachmaninov’s Second Sonata, as well as other great piano works by Tchaikovsky, Kreisler and Barber.
Our final October concert, taking place on the 24th, given by former Head of School Professor Kenneth Hamilton, will be a thrilling programme of piano works.
The Solem Quartet will be performing in the Concert Hall on the 28th of November. This string quartet comprises of Amy Tress and William Newell (Violins), Stephen Upshaw (Viola) and Stephanie Tress (Cello). Praised for their “immaculate precision and spirit” (The Strad) and “cultured tone” (Arts Desk), the Solem Quartet has established itself as one of the most innovative and adventurous quartets of its generation. A 2020 awardee of the Jerwood Arts Live Work Fund, the Solem Quartet takes its place amongst some of the UK’s brightest artistic voices. They enjoy a busy concert schedule, ranging from international tours to performances at venues such as London’s Wigmore and Queen Elizabeth Halls, Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, Oxford’s Holywell Music Room, Perth Concert Hall (subsequently broadcast by Radio 3) and the Tung Auditorium in Liverpool. They are Quartet in Residence at the University of Liverpool and regularly appear as guest teachers across the UK.
As we approach the end of term, a selection of our School Ensembles will showcase their talents. On the 5th of December, Cardiff University Chamber Choir and Collegium will be presenting a joint concert in the Temple of Peace displaying a range of Baroque and Contemporary vocal and chamber works. The Jazz Ensemble will be performing in our Concert Hall on the 8th of December, and the Contemporary Music Group on the 12th, with a variety of interesting repertoire from 20th century composers. The series will conclude with Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra in Hoddinott Hall on Saturday 16th of December, performing a selection of ballet repertoire and the Stravinsky Firebird Suite.
All information about booking is available on our Ticketsource page, as well as more detailed programme information for each concert.
