Dr Angela Mihai elected Vice President of SIAM-UKIE

Dr Angela Mihai, Director of Research and Innovation at the Cardiff School of Mathematics, has been elected Vice President of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland Section of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM-UKIE).

Dr Mihai, who will hold the position from 2023 to 2025, said: “Thank you to everyone who voted in the SIAM-UKIE elections this year! I look forward to an exciting two-year mandate to promote and support industrial and applied mathematics, and pursue the SIAM commitment to empowering equitable, diverse, and inclusive participation in all activities organised by the Section.

Working closely with the President and the Secretary & Treasurer, I will focus on strengthening SIAM-UKIE as a network and a springboard for applied mathematicians from under-represented groups, at different stages of their career.

The SIAM-UKIE Section was formed in 1996. Membership is free, and automatic for all SIAM members whose residence or principal place of work or study is the UK or Republic of Ireland. The SIAM acronym is multifunctional, representing the ethos of the society with its double meaning of “science and industry advance with mathematics”.

As Director of Research within the School of Mathematics Dr Mihai As Director of Research within the School of Mathematics Dr Mihaiplays an integral part in leading the School’s internationally recognised research outputs. Her own research speciality includes the mathematics of solid mechanics, modelling of soft materials, numerical analysis and scientific computing.

Dr Mihai is also faculty adviser for the SIAM-IMA Student Chapter at Cardiff University.
