Enterprising students eye prizes to grow ideas

Cash prizes totalling £17,500 and a host of business support is on offer for Cardiff students at the University’s annual Enterprise & Start-Up Awards.

Cardiff University Student Enterprise and Start-Up have teamed up with Santander, Gavin Davidson and Engineers in Business to bring you our biggest awards yet.

With a prize pot on offer across three different categories, students have the opportunity to turn ideas into reality.

“We’ve got some amazing enterprise packages on offer at this year’s event, but students will have to act fast – applications close on 17 April,” said Georgie Moorcroft, Senior Manager of Student Enterprise and Start-Up, based in Cardiff’s Centre for Student Life.

The three categories are:

Santander Go Getter Start-Up Award

Are you almost ready to launch your business idea or have recently launched? Have you done the research and have a strong business plan? Are you looking for that initial investment to get your idea off the ground or grow your business? Then this is the awards for you!

£5000 award for first place

£3500 award for second place

£2000 award for third place

Gavin Davidson Social Enterprise Award

Are you passionate about inequality and social change? Do you have an idea that could make a difference? Would an initial investment help you to start helping the world around you? Then this is the awards for you!

£3000 award for the winner

£1000 award for the runner-up

Inspired Engineers Award (only open to Engineering students)

Are you an engineer with an idea that could solve a problem or make a difference? Do you think your idea has the possibility to be a reality? Would you like initial investment to explore the full potential of your idea? Then this is the awards for you!

£1500 award for first place

£1000 award for second place

£500 award for third place

Georgie added: “The Awards are open to all students from undergraduate right through to 3 years past graduation. We welcome both individual and team applications.

“Anyone interested in applying for any of the above awards just needs to sign up to the Enterprise and Start-Up Support Package Pathway on their Student Futures Account and we’ll send out the application form!”

Shortlisted students will be offered the opportunity to present ideas to a judging panel on either 9, 10, or 11 May 2023. All successful submissions will be notified by 26 April.2023, and details of the presentation day will be sent directly.

An awards and networking evening will take place in sbarc|spark – Cardiff’s newest home for the university’s growing stable of spinouts, start-ups and social enterprises.
