Standards of professionalism in dentistry

The CUREMeDE team, in collaboration with Jonathan Cowpe; emeritus professor at the Cardiff University School of Dentistry, and Hannah Barrow; an Academic Clinical Fellow at the Eastman Dental Institute at University College London, have published a new article in the British Dental Journal.
The article is titled ‘Are the standards of professionalism expected in dentistry justified? Views of dental professionals and the public’. The paper implemented an online survey to explore individuals’ views of professional and unprofessional behaviours in dentistry.
The paper identified two key lines of argument: professionalism standards are justifiably high, and professionalism standards are too high. The paper highlights the impact of the high standards of professionalism on dentists and provides recommendations for encouraging a positive and reflective culture of professionalism.
