New Year Honours

Professor Colin Riordan

Members of the University community including staff and alumni have been recognised for their outstanding achievements in the King’s New Year Honours List for 2023.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan, is made a CBE in recognition of his service to UK higher education. Speaking about his CBE, Professor Riordan said he was “surprised but deeply appreciative of the honour.”

Also recognised is Professor Peter Ghazal, who is made OBE for services to systems immunology. Sêr Cymru Chair in Systems Medicine at the Systems Immunity Research Institute, Professor Ghazal has pioneered the field of host genomics of early-life infection.

Professor Helen Sweetland (PgDip 2010), Emeritus Clinical Professor at the School of Medicine, is awarded an MBE for services to patient care and medical education.

Dr Gordon Sanghera (BSc 1983, PhD 1987, Hon 2022) was awarded a CBE for services to the Technology Sector. He is the co-founder of Oxford Nanopore Technologies, a company developing revolutionary DNA sequencing technology which is now being used in nearly 100 countries.

Professor Sian Griffiths OBE (Hon 2012) who is currently Emeritus Professor of Public Health at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Visiting Professor at Imperial College London and Associate Director of Public Health England, and Deputy Chair of GambleAware. She was awarded a CBE for her voluntary and charitable services, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor David Mosey (LLB 1976) was awarded a CBE for his services to the construction industry. He is a professor and former director of the King’s College London Centre of Construction Law and Dispute Resolution, and was formerly Head of Projects and Construction at law firm Trowers and Hamlins LLP for over 20 years.

Reverend Jonathan Ball (MTh 2007) was awarded an OBE for services to the Royal Marines. He is the chief executive of the Royal Marines Association and the Royal Marines Charity.

Helen Goulden (BA 1994) the chief executive of The Young Foundation, an organisation that works collaboratively to improve lives and address shared challenges, driving social change for stronger communities and a fairer future. Helen was awarded an OBE for services to the development of sustainable communities.

Beverley Gower-Jones (BSc 1995) was awarded an OBE for her services to Net Zero Innovation. She is the founder and chief executive of Carbon Limiting Technologies, a company that works with industry and government to commercialise low carbon innovations and accelerate clean growth.

David Palmer-Jones (BSCEcon 1984) has been awarded an OBE for services to recycling. David is the Senior Vice President of Suez Recycling and Recovery’s Northern Europe sector.

Andrew John Rose (MSc 1998) is the director of The National Lottery Community Fund Wales. He was awarded an OBE for services to civil society.

Dr Brian Dickie (PhD 1991) received an MBE for his services to Motor Neurone Disease research. Brian is the director of research development for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Dr Stephen Mowle (MBBCh 1993) is honorary treasurer of the Royal College of General Practitioners and general practitioner for Hetherington Group Practice, London Borough of Lambeth. He received an MBE for his services to healthcare.

Reverend Euryl Howells (BD 1993, PGCert 2007) is senior chaplain for Hywel Dda University Health Board. Euryl was awarded a BEM for services to the chaplaincy in NHS Wales.

Malcolm Johnson (BScTech 1976) is deputy secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union of the United Nations. He was awarded a CMG for services to the UN, to the Commonwealth and to global information and communication technologies.

Edward O’Brien (MSc 2002) was awarded the King’s Ambulance Service Medal. He is clinical lead in the palliative and end of life care at the Welsh Ambulance Service.

Lieutenant Colonel Dominic Lethbridge (MEng 2001) is a member of the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He received a promotion in and appointment to the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire as a member.
