Because of You Festival

24 June 2022

Supporters of the University have heard first-hand about the impact of their donations, time and fundraising in an annual day of thanks.

The ‘Because of You Festival’ brought to life the real-world benefits of supporting the University, its researchers and students.

Guests included those who have made a donation to the University or pledged a gift in their Will  and supporters who have run the Cardiff Half Marathon and fundraised for our research.

It also honoured the volunteers who have given their time and expertise to help our students at open days, careers talks, and through internships, or to sit on advisory boards and University Court.

Greg Spencer, Deputy Director of Development & Head of Fundraising from the University’s Development and Alumni Relations department said: “It was wonderful to welcome so many of our supporters back to campus to come and see the difference they make. Thanks to these individuals, our students have benefitted from our mental health and wellbeing services, employability opportunities and even had the opportunity to try research for themselves.

“Our supporters have also helped our researchers to accelerate discoveries in cancer research, neuroscience and mental health research, and immunology, making a difference to the lives of people suffering with a range of illnesses, from cancer, to depression, to arthritis, to sepsis, to dementia.

“They have also made a real contribution to the University, shaping its strategic direction. It was a fantastic day and we’re so grateful to every single one of our donors, fundraisers and volunteers for their ongoing support.”

During the event, which was held in the University’s Centre for Student Life, guests heard from three early career researchers who have received funding for their work.

They also had a tour of the building and listened to students about the support and opportunities made available to them thanks to their generosity.

The event was hosted by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan and attended by Chair of Council, Pat Younge (BSc 1987).
