Students from MSc Environmental Design of Buildings and MSc Sustainable Mega Buildings have just returned from their field trip to Zurich, Switzerland.

The students were guided through the technicalities and plant rooms of some of the most spectacular and forward-thinking buildings in the city.  Access to these buildings was arranged by Hon. Prof. Denis Kopitsis of Kopitsis Bauphysik AG which has been involved in the building physics aspect of design.  The visits covered a range of building types and included new build and retrofit projects including:

  • The Circle at Zurich Airport
  • Kunsthaus Zurich
  • Glatt-Tower Wallisellen
  • Forum Chriesbach – EAWAG Dubendorf
  • EMPA – NEST Dubendorf
  • Novartis Campus -  Basel
  • Helvetia Campus - Basel

Students have praised the visit for being informative and enjoyable. Environmental Design of Buildings student Shweta Salvankar said:

“Thanks to course leaders Dr Vicki Stevenson and Dr Eshrar Latif for organising such an amazing study trip for all of us. Exploring various sustainable buildings in Zurich, Switzerland and learning from well-known building physicist Denis Kopitsis was truly a once in a lifetime experience.”

The students were escorted by programme leads Dr Eshrar Latif and Dr Vicki Stevenson who enjoyed the visits and the company of the students.

Both MSc programmes offer a range of study trips in the UK, Europe, or further afield. Guided visits are organised to buildings that demonstrate the application of the ideas taught in the courses. Students also have the opportunity to meet architects and built environment professionals who collaborate with the school.
