Professors Ian Hargreaves (Cardiff University) and John Hartley (Curtin University, Australia) launched their new co-edited book, The Creative Citizen Unbound, at the House of Lords on Tuesday (April 19).

As PM in the 1940s Clement Attlee (see image above) extended British citizenship equally to every resident of the Empire. Hargreaves & Hartley’s new book, co-authored by members of the research team, focuses on new experiences of citizenship in the global, digital age, including co-creative enterprise in hyperlocal journalism, community-led design in urban planning, and creative media communities across the UK.

The launch, hosted by crossbencher Lord Andrew Mawson, attracted a wide range of interest: Among those attending were writer Charles Leadbeater, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, Geoffrey Crossick (former VC of London University and author of the new AHRC report on Cultural Value), and representatives of many of the community associations who collaborated with the research project.

The book reports on a 3-year AHRC-funded project led by Professor Hargreaves. Its Cardiff launch will take place on Tuesday 26 April, at 6.00pm in the VJ Gallery - Main Building. The event is open to all, but please book via Eventbrite.

The Creative Citizen Unbound is published by Policy Press, Bristol.
