Online CPD course made available to undergraduate students

Structural Geology for Mining and Exploration

An online CPD course developed by Professor Tom Blenkinsop of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, is helping undergraduate students to access learning to support their degrees.

Structural Geology for Exploration and Mining is an online CPD course introducing the importance of structural analysis in mineral exploration, and how to record, analyse and present data.

When the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on face to face teaching became clear, Professor Blenkinsop was very keen to open the CPD course to his undergraduate students, to support learning and provide additional study resources at this extremely difficult time. We liaised with the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences to enable undergraduate structural geology students to access the content.

Tom said, “Making this material available to undergraduate students has been a long-held ambition, and now could not be a better time to provide additional support to students. I’m delighted that we have been able to work together so quickly to make this available to students and I hope it will be a valuable resource for their revision.”

A total of 104 undergraduate students studying Structural Geology, and Applied Structural Geology now have access to the course. The online course maps very closely onto each programme of study: the first half supports Structural Geology, and is supplemented by quizzes, additional images, diagrams, videos and 3D models; the second half covers Applied Structural Geology and overlaps with some lecture content about controls on the geometry of ore bodies.

In both cases, the online course reinforces the taught module and should be useful for additional revision.

I have just completed [this] course and wanted to say I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s extremely helpful to have such a direct application of structural into exploration and mining - I think it will hold us third years in good stead for the future!

About the CPD course

The Structural Geology for Exploration and Mining course is designed for professionals in the exploration and mining industry and introduces delegates to the importance of structural geology to the industry, the basics of what to measure, methods of measurement, and how to record data.

A hugely successful pilot course ran in early 2020 and the course is now taking bookings for the June intake. Find out more.

Virtual CPD summer school

We are delighted to announce that Professor Blenkinsop is taking part in our virtual summer school (running 22-26 June). Tom will be hosting a webinar – details to be released soon. Follow us on Twitter to be the first to find out more.
