Schools celebrate science quiz success

Schools from north and south Wales have beaten off competition from dozens across Wales to win a science competition organised by Cardiff University.
Ysgol Tryfan from Bangor, Gwynedd, and Brynteg School from Bridgend won this year’s Life Sciences Challenge annual quiz run by the School of Medicine.
The event for Year 10 pupils features parallel competitions for Welsh-medium and English-medium schools and attracted almost 500 pupils.
It aims to inspire the pupils to consider careers involving science and encourage curiosity about the natural world.
Each team comprises four members with an interest in maths, science and the world around them.
The quiz, which began with preliminary stages in February, is run by PhD students, medical students, scientists and early career researchers.
The finals took place on 13 September in the main lecture theatre in the education suite at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
This year’s finalists were Brynteg School v Ysgol Brynhyfryd, Ruthin, Denbighshire (English) and Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, Barry v Ysgol Tryfan (Welsh).
Winning schools are presented with a trophy and a cheque for £150 to be spent on science within the school.
Prizes are sponsored by The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) Cymru Wales.
The quiz forms part of the School of Medicine’s Science in Health programme of activities. This also includes the annual Science in Health Live event in March, the public lecture series, which runs from October to March, and the Work Experience Scheme, which takes place in June/July (www.cardiff.ac.uk/scienceinhealth).
