As demand for customized, configured product increases and product lead times shorten (primarily due to the ‘expectancy of immediacy’ - or "I want it now!" syndrome), then logistics service providers will need to offer more and more services in order to compete in the age of the digital supply chain.
Panalpina has recently started to offer models of inventory ownership to its customers, which takes over a significant responsibility for inventory procurement; a first for a freight forwarder.
Procurement and sourcing, combined with inventory ownership, is just one of a menu of possible business model innovations for logistics service providers to offer additional value up (and down) the supply chain.
