Researcher working in the CMP Labs

Along with our partner universities, Sheffield, Manchester and UCL, and our industrial partners, we have launched an exciting new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing.

The new Centre will be based at Cardiff University and will provide a number of fully funded EPSRC PhD studentships for four years for selected students. Successful candidates will also undertake an MSc during their first year and will be awarded an MSc qualification if they complete the year satisfactorily, before going on to study their PhD, at either Cardiff, or at one of our partner universities.

The aim of our CDT is to supply the UK with scientists and engineers with the skills and knowledge needed to lead research and manufacturing in the compound semiconductor industry. We aim to benefit the whole supply chain, from the manufacturing of materials and devices, to the systems and applications that use them.

The compound semiconductor cluster which is developing in South Wales expects to create over 5,000 jobs in the coming years. Cardiff University and its partner universities are all leading research institutions in this field and are equipped with the expertise and facilities to provide the intellectually challenging training needed by the industry.

Professor Peter Smowton said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for graduates to obtain the training they need to enter an exciting, fast changing industry that needs talented scientists and engineers. They will not only gain useful research skills but will be able to learn directly about the industry from our partner companies.”
