Ty Hafan and Cardiff University paediatric palliative care training course

Cardiff University and Ty Hafan collaborate on new paediatric palliative care training course.

March 2019 saw the launch of Cardiff University and Ty Hafan’s joint Problem Solving in Paediatric Palliative Care short course.  This innovative new training course aims to improve patient care by delivering accessible education through supporting healthcare professionals to problem solve in paediatric palliative care, whatever their setting or area of interest.

Course leader and Paediatric Tutor Dr Jo Griffiths said "we are thrilled at the level of interest in this new course. Colleagues tell us that they have been  looking for further training in paediatric palliative care, that is accessible but still allows face to face discussion in what can be a challenging area of work – this course has been designed to meet these needs and to facilitate attendees making a real difference in their place of work."

Ty Hafan’s Head of Governance and Quality Hayley Humphries said "This inaugural course is a really exciting opportunity to look at paediatric palliative care learning and development in a different way. We were really keen to bring together professionals from all disciplines to look at issues that impact them in their day-to-day working practice and look at how they could solve them through this project-based  course.  We have strived to put together a programme that aims to support students to  achieve personal development and we anticipate that it will have a positive impact in the field of paediatric palliative care for other teams and professionals".

Mid-course feedback has been excellent, with delegates highly engaged and excited by both the course and the real impact this will have on their day-to-day workplaces.  One delegate noted that “I have a better understanding of how to communicate with parents/carers about palliative services available and how to approach more difficult conversations.”  We have delegates from Wales, Ireland and Scotland, as well as across a range of healthcare professionals.

The Masters level short course includes four monthly face-to-face days, alongside additional online learning, including reading materials, audio podcasts and short video clips.
