Grangetown Youth Forum Step Up 2 University
25 February 2019
Young people from the Grangetown Youth Forum joined over 700 secondary pupils on the hugely popular and successful Cardiff University Step Up 2 University programme organised by the Outreach and Widening Participation Team.
The programme is set to offer young people the chance to experience university life, build an understanding of the different opportunities available as well as the confidence and commitment to see it through over the A-Level period of their studies.
The programme is a core part of our Widening Access programme and develops a three-year relationship with pupils in schools from which there have traditionally been low rates of progression to university.
Ali Abdi, Community Gateway Partnerships Manager, accompanied ten young people to the launch of the Step Up 2 University initiative which took place at the Cardiff Business School and was very happy how well the evening was organised by the Cardiff University team.
Speaking about the event Ali said:
“I’m delighted to bring young people from Grangetown engaged with our Community Gateway project to a fabulous evening at Cardiff University that gives them a real glimpse of what university life is like. Schemes like Step-Up 2 University raise aspirations and attainment and provide important support for pupils. All of our young people enjoyed the event and absolutely loved the welcome by the university - I’m really looking forward to following their journey through the Step-Up process”
Scott McKenzie, Widening Participation Manager responsible for the Step Up 2 University Programme and for organising the event commented:
“Last night we launched our new Step Up scheme with a record-breaking 700+ people from the Cardiff Capital Region coming to Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd to take part in academic masterclasses. It’s great to be working more closely with the Community Gateway project and thanks to Ali Abdi for coming along with young people from Grangetown!”
