Celebrating the International Year of the Periodic Table

21 January 2019

BBC Studios Cardiff

Dr David Willock, Reader in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, and Dr Rebecca Melen, Senior Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry and EPSRC Early Career Fellow, have appeared on BBC Radio Wales’ Science Cafe programme to celebrate the 150 year legacy of the periodic table.

On the show, they discuss the table’s vital role in our understanding of the elements which make up our universe.

The first recognisable periodic table was devised and published in 1869 by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, primarily to illustrate periodic trends of the then-known elements. Since then, the periodic table has expanded to include 118 known elements.

This edition of Science Cafe was broadcast on BBC Radio Wales at 6.30pm on 15th January 2019. You can listen to the programme on the BBC website.
