Working 9 to 5: Second year students begin industry placements

Swapping lectures for company meetings, and lunches at the Union for the corporate cafeteria. This, and an unrivalled experience of the business world, is what 14 second year students are embarking upon through Cardiff Business School’s BSc Business Management with Integrated Work Placement degree programme.
The programme gives students, who have met the necessary academic criteria, the opportunity to undertake an industry placement in the second semester of their second year. The 20-week paid placement is credit bearing, counting towards their final degree, and sees them placed at some of the UK’s leading companies.
This is the third year that the programme has been running and applicants undergo a rigorous selection and interview process which echoes real world recruitment practices.
The placements commenced on January 5th and will run until May 22nd with regular reviews and visits by School co-ordinators. Seven major companies welcomed students for this year’s programme with many more new companies set to participate in 2016.

Dr Sue Bartlett, Cardiff Business School’s Director of Student Experience, said: “The integrated work placement programme gives students an excellent opportunity to experience the business world, translating theoretical study into practical application, long before graduation. It provides a grounding for a variety of careers across a range of management functions, such as marketing, finance, and human resource management, and proves a testing ground for individual skills and capabilities.
“We are delighted to have many renowned companies taking students on, which is a testament to the quality and aptitude of the students themselves. Importantly, that student quality is proved time and again during placement with many past participants securing graduate positions with their host companies.
