Engagement project scoops major award at the Times Higher Education Awards

The Caerau and Ely Rediscovering Heritage Project (CAER) has scooped the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community Award at the prestigious Times Higher Education Awards.

The inspiring project focuses on Caerau Hillfort, a nationally important heritage site that nestles within vibrant communities facing significant social and economic challenges. It has won acclaim for its ethos of putting local people at the heart of archaeological and historical research through excavations, artefact analyses, exhibitions and films.

Established in 2012, CAER has built partnerships with seven local schools involving 1,538 pupils in joint activities, and engaged with almost 15,000 visitors at numerous events.

The multi award-winning project is a collaborative partnership between Cardiff University, community development charity Action in Caerau and Ely, local schools, community groups and major heritage organisations in Wales, led by co-directors historian Dr Dave Wyatt and archaeologist Dr Oliver Davis.

Cardiff University also lifted International Collaboration of the Year trophy at the glittering ceremony in London.
