Young musicians participate in workshops with Cardiff University Big Band led by MA student Matt Lush

MA composition student Matt Lush recently held an interactive and collaborative workshop and informal concert for talented young musicians.

The Cardiff University Big Band Workshop Day invited talented young musicians to join Matt Lush and the Big Band to develop their skills in jazz improvisation and ensemble performance.

During the fun and informative workshops, Matt led the young musicians through working with the outstanding performers in all sections of the ensemble (reeds – alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, brass – trumpets, and rhythm section – drums and guitars). The day of workshops culminated in an informal concert at the end of the day.

Dr Daniel Bickerton, Director of Undergraduate Studies, welcomed an enthusiastic and receptive audience to the concert. They enjoyed several pieces that the students had worked on during the day, including a performance by just our young visitors, accompanied by Matt Lush on piano.

Parents commented on how much their children had enjoyed the opportunity and were grateful of the music-making opportunities that the School of Music offers in the face of funding cuts to the arts in South Wales.

Dr Bickerton, who teaches Matt on the MA module Music Leadership and Public Engagement, said: “I am thrilled to bits with how successful the event was – we take pride in our engagement events at Cardiff University School of Music, and realise just how vital these experiences are for younger musicians who aspire to study Music at university. Our visitors performed extremely well and I'm very proud of Matt for leading a thoroughly professional and inspiring event."

Musical Director Matt Lush said:  "It was an exciting day of music-making with our visitors sitting amongst the Cardiff University Big Band members getting a real experience of university life and absorbing high levels of musicianship. The day was incredibly rewarding, eye-opening and great fun!"
