A social entrepreneur, the MD of an engineering services company, an award-winning ‘mumpreneur’, the founder of Wales’ leading training provider and the owners of an iconic Welsh woollen mill are all set to join Cardiff Business School as it launches its Public Value Entrepreneurs in Residence (PVEiR) Scheme.

The six successful PVEiRs - Yaina Samuels,NuHi Training, Allan Meek, SCS Group, Zoë-Lisa Blackler, The Blackler Group, Andrew Cooksley, ACT Training and Eifion and Amanda Griffiths, Melin Tregwynt -were selected from a competitive application process to help enhance the School’s capacity to support entrepreneurial and innovative thinking.

Professor Martin Kitchener, Dean of Cardiff Business School, said: “I’m very much looking forward to welcoming our inaugural entrepreneurs in residence to the School on 5 December 2017...”

“Many of the successful candidates already have existing relationships with our faculty where they contribute to our outstanding teaching provision. So this formal arrangement is a marker for how we want these relationships to develop.”

“I am eager to introduce the entrepreneurs to our progressive public value mission and anticipate opportunities to hear their advice on its development.”

New business ideas

Working with the School’s ambitious students and graduates, they will help nurture promising new business ideas through the exchange of essential practical enterprise skills and experience.

Eifion Griffiths said: “We're excited about the opportunity to engage with young enthusiastic students from all over and benefit from their insights and different world views...”

“Based in a remote rural area, we have a very different business model. As most businesses wouldn’t start in this way, we hope to offer students a different experience of business development and marketing to the norm.”

Andrew Cooksley added: “I want to engage Cardiff’s Business students and hopefully inspire them to realise that life as an entrepreneur is a brilliant one.

“I’m also looking forward to bringing highly successful entrepreneurs to the school to share their stories with the students.”

The six business leaders will also have the opportunity to work alongside the School’s academics in fields like, innovation, entrepreneurship, strategic business leadership and social enterprise.

Yaina Samuels said: “Not only do I get to share my skills as a social entrepreneur, but the scheme also provides me with an academic platform of support which I can use to build up and promote the ‘Buy Social’ initiative...”

“When we buy services from a social enterprise we are choosing to spend money with a business that is giving something back to the community. Now that's what I call public value.”

Knowledge exchange

The PVEiRs will contribute to knowledge exchange and co-create new concepts and ideas at the cutting edge of business education, research, innovation and engagement.

Allan Meek said: “I’m particularly interested in psychology and employee engagement and hope to get involved in research in these areas should the opportunity arise.”
