Filming locations

We can offer producers access to a wide selection of internal and external settings for commercial and non-commercial filming.

Our impressive estate boasts a variety of building styles, ranging from traditional buildings designed in the early 20th Century by such architects as George Caroe and Harris & Moodie, to modern buildings featuring modern scientific settings such as the Hadyn Ellis Building.

The University works with the Wales Screen Commission, a free support and advice service that is part of the Welsh Assembly Government's Creative Business Wales branch.

Our campus on film

Recent productions to use our estate include:

  • Requiem
  • Doctor Who
  • BBC Three’s ‘Class’
  • Sherlock
  • Decline and Fall
  • award-winning Sky comedy, Stella.

The Film Unit co-ordinates location requests for the University to assist with the smooth running of your production and ensure minimal disruption to staff and students.

Commercial filming

If you would like to enquire about filming drama or factual productions at the University, please contact the Film Unit to discuss your enquiry in the first instance.

Enquiries for filming in and immediately around University Hospital Wales are handled by the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and filming in Cardiff University Students’ Union is managed by the Students’ Union Communication team.

All relevant permissions must be given and documentation submitted prior to filming taking place, this will typically include evidencing of insurance details and a full risk assessment in addition to a location agreement and agreement of a location fee.

All enquiries should be directed to the Film Unit, Communications and Marketing.
