Solicitors Practice Course - hear from Lucy
Lucy Winstone from Tredegar studied her LLB at the School of Law and Politics and wanted to continue her studies with us.
Following graduation, she signed up for our Solicitors Practice Course (SPC) which we designed to prepare students for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE).
We spoke to Lucy, following a few months on the programme, to find out about her experiences and why she thinks the SPC is the best possible option for anyone thinking of sitting the SQE.
Why did you choose Cardiff to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam?
I was attracted to the structure of the course. I liked that it’s designed to prepare students for the July SQE sitting, rather than following a more intensive timetable aimed at the January exams. For me, this approach provided the right balance, allowing enough time to work through the entire SQE specification thoroughly before dedicating a significant period to revision. I found this structure much better suited to my learning style and felt it put me in a stronger position going into the exams.
What do you enjoy most about the SPC?
The level of in-person support available. Preparing for the SQE can feel overwhelming, but attending regular face-to-face seminars makes the process much more manageable. The teaching staff are incredibly supportive and approachable, always taking the time to answer any questions, no matter how silly they seem.
The seminars also provide a great opportunity to build relationships with other students. Being surrounded by people who are experiencing the same challenges is an invaluable experience as we can encourage and support one another. Looking back, I don't think I would have found the preparation process nearly as manageable without the guidance of the teaching staff and the encouragement of my peers.
What do you like about the School of Law and Politics?
The strong sense of community. Everyone genuinely wants to see each other succeed and there is such a supportive atmosphere. Whether it’s sharing revision tips, encouraging each other before assessments or celebrating each other’s achievements, it creates an environment where you feel motivated to do your best. The staff play a huge role in fostering this sense of community by encouraging collaboration through group work and organising end-of-term celebrations.
How do you think the SPC will support your ambitions/future career?
The SPC has played a significant role in preparing me for SQE1 and has given me a strong foundation for the next stage of my legal career. I’ve secured a training contract starting in 2027, and the course has provided me with the knowledge, structure and support needed to prepare for the SQE before beginning my training.
The SPC has also helped me begin to develop the practical skills that are essential for SQE2 and life as a trainee solicitor, including legal drafting, legal research and case and matter analysis.
Would you recommend the SPC here at Cardiff?
I’d recommend the SPC to anyone taking the SQE. The regular in-person seminars that help consolidate your knowledge carried out by supportive staff create a great learning environment. The course is well structured allowing you to develop your knowledge throughout the year whilst leaving dedicated time for revision. Preparing for the SQE is a challenging process, but having lecturers who are invested in your success makes a huge difference.
