Emphasis is placed on imaging appearances, clinical significance, reporting standards, and patient management considerations.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the relevant skull and orbital anatomy.
  • Identify intra-orbital foreign bodies on radiographic and cross-sectional imaging.
  • Differentiate between metallic foreign bodies and image artefacts.
  • Understand the risks associated with imaging of patients with intra-orbital metallic foreign bodies.
  • Produce clear, concise, and clinically relevant imaging reports.
  • Manage findings appropriately in accordance with current legislation and local protocols.

Training radiographers to report pre-MRI intra-orbital foreign body (IOFB) screening images can improve patient safety and service efficiency by enabling timely identification or exclusion of metallic foreign bodies, reducing delays to MRI examinations, and minimising appointment cancellations.

This enhanced skill mix increases reporting capacity, reduces reliance on radiologists for routine screening examinations, improves patient flow and access to MRI, and allows radiologists to focus on more complex cases.
